Los Barriles
Los Barriles is located on the beautiful shores of the Sea of Cortes about an hour east of San Jose del Cabo. The beaches are perfectly located for swimming or various other water sports and are missing the big waves and deep waters of the west side of the Baja Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. On any given day, especially in the winter, you may find hundreds of wind surfers or kite surfers enjoying the calm waters and ocean breezes that perfectly accommodate those two up and coming sports. In fact, Los Barriles has become such a popular location for the relatively new sport of Kite Surfing that the 2nd Annual “Lord Of The Winds” kite surfing competition was held in Los Barriles for the second year in a row. This event was held in October and had a price of $20,000 handed out for the various competitions making it one of the biggest tournaments of it’s kind in the world. The original sport, though, that put Baja on the map for outdoorsmen is the famous sport fishing. Whether it be for the big marlins or the smaller hard fighting dorados, fishermen from all over the world have enjoyed the challenge of landing the bounty of fish that the Sea of Cortez has to offer.
Of course, the area is also perfectly suited for the vacationer that prefers to just relax for the week and get away from the stress and strains of the modern world. There are several very comfortable hotels in the area to enjoy. Although they may lack the opulence of the newer hotels in nearby Cabo San Lucas, they make up for it with the throw back charm of a more rustic look and feel. Los Barriles is also a great place for kids to grow up and live a casual, laid-back lifestyle.
So, whatever the reason, this paradise that the famous American author John Steinback described as an “ocean ferocious with life” is definitely a place to consider for an original vacation at the quaint town of Los Barriles, Baja California Sur.
